Unprofessional staff

All families need to ensure if their family member is in a wheelchair and needs assistance, be sure to ask what the policy is to take care of him/her. My mother fell out of bed and she was on the floor for a while. Staff were nasty to my family members and management did nothing.

Review for Brookdale Gardens of Tarzana

A place for mom found BROOKDALE and I had an on-site visit within a couple days. BROOKDALE itself turned out to be the finest retirement facility I've ever seen. I would feel good about my own mother living there, if it became necessary. So I would highly recommend A place for MOM and BROOKDALE

Overall experience

The aides are great but not enough of them and you can wait over an hour for help, even to use the toilet. The admin staff basically 1 person besides the director and things move VERY slowly. The activity director retired and she was amazing, always tons of different things going on. Now they hired a new one but she's pretty basic so a lot of times is the same bingo and cards. Also, they haven't had a driver for the van to take people out for maybe a year and the van is broken.

Great environment

Nice sized community with a positive vibe environment & well mannered staffs. Looks always clean and maintained. The facility respects elders rights and passion to live a wonderful life. Things might not be always available but they listen and work with residents to make improvements. I am so glad we ended up with them.

Families experience /Needs improvement

I explained my mom's health needs numerous times, even to the nurse during the assessment. My brother visited my mom daily and found her pad and wheelchair pad very wet. She had also fallen out of bed of bed and not found for a while. When he brought up his concern with the staff they were very nasty and talked back at him. He was very stressed. After a week he took my mom home. He asked for a refund, management stated they needed a letter from the Dr which he got. They said it didn't have enough information and refused the refund. My mother's health has deteriorated since that visit. She had a stroke in March a week after leaving Brookdale. She was hospitalized a second time and cannot return home. My brother and I am very heartbroken and disgusted with Brookdale's handling of our situation.

Review for Brookdale Gardens of Tarzana

We are very pleased with Brookdale. Mom loves it. There's always a variety of things to do. Staff and management are always friendly and helpful. The chef is excellent. We originally chose Brookdale because of our first impression when we toured it and the closeness to our home. The whole family is pleased with our decision to place mom there.

Not recommended

My loved one was a resident at Brookdale Gardens of Tarzana and I would not recommend this facility to others. Food was an issue, caregiving was an issue, medication was an issue, the organization and administration were issues.

I toured this community. The staff seemed knowledgeable in what was offered. The layout of the apartments wasn't quite what we were looking for. It seems to be a facility for much older folks also, so not the best fit for my loved one.

A Place of Kindness and Respect

The staff at Brookdale Gardens Tarzana treats the residents with kindness and respect. It's a smaller community where residents are treated more as individuals than they are at larger places we've looked at. Probably one of the most important things is that the dining is excellent. They have a chef who caters meals toward the residents' likes and is also a very kind person. Basically it's a place where we feel our mother is treated with kindness all around.

Perfect for our family

Our first impression of Brookdale was that it completely changed our idea on what assisted living looked like. It has a very homey atmosphere, it did not feel like a "facility" or "nursing home." It is bright clean, modern and very welcoming. We just so happened to stumble upon this community after others that we were recommended and we liked the smallness of it, it is closer in location and the staff turnover rate is very low. It was a great find.

We are beyond excited to have our mother at The Gardens. The facility is clean and fully renovated. The staff is extremely friendly, well prepared and organized. Making the transition was a breeze. My mother felt so welcomed. We hope to be a member of the community for many, many years!

I distinctly remember the first conversation I had with [name removed] of Brookdale Gardens of Tarzana. I was in a panic. I explained to [name removed] that we were no longer able to properly care for my mother, [name removed], 88 years old, and I didn't know what to do. The thought of dropping my mother off at a "nursing home" seemed sad and cruel, but she quickly explained to me why BGT was not a nursing home. She very quickly talked me off the ledge and gave me a very detailed and accurate description of BGT that made me realize I wasn't alone and she was there to help, so I made arrangements for a tour for the next day. I had already toured 5-6 other facilities and while they were just okay, I wasn't feeling at peace with any of them. When I got to BGT and met [name removed], she immediately put me at ease and gave me a complete tour of the facility. She then took the time to answer all of my many questions, not only about Brookdale, but also about the complete process of transitioning my mother to assisted living. She asked about my mother's favorite food and her hobbies and many other questions about who my mother is. This al helped tremendously. [name removed] was able to answer EVERY question I had accurately and thoughtfully, as well as give me so much more information that I didn't know or had thought about. She did this all with kindness and understanding. [Name removed] suggested that I bring my mother over for a tour so I followed that advice. She arranged for Chef [name removed] to prepare my mother's favorite Italian meal, eggplant parmesan, as well as for her to have lunch with several ambassadors. This was a tremendous success and went a very long way towards putting my mother's mind at ease. . . as well as my own. The move in process was fairly painless. [Name removed] and the rest of the staff helped us with all the information we needed as well as all the information we didn't know we needed. Mom has now been living at Brookdale for about 6 weeks and the transition has been very smooth in every way. She's made friends there and has been enjoying some of the activities. She's told me on many occasions, "Everyone's so nice here. They take good care of me." That's all I need to hear.

Considering the circumstance i am happy!

From what we can see the community is kept clean, our loved one is happy there and she is being well taken care of. She really likes the food, which is important. In the last couple of months they have allowed more activities, they are doing the best they can to keep the residents busy.
