Overall care is pretty solid, but meals leave a lot to be desired

Staff is attentive. Activities are good. Laundry service often loses his items even though they are labeled and are supposed to be done in a bag to keep everything together. Food is really falling short. They have a weekly menu and an "always available" menu, but often the food that is served does not match the menu and when my dad doesn't like the regular item, they tell him he can't have the "always available" menu items. This happens very frequently. Food that is supposed to be hot is served cold and my dad is told it cannot be warmed up. This coming week I am going to attend several meals to see for myself how the meal service is handled.

He Didn't Last Two Full Days

I looked at several facilities before I chose Hillhaven. I questioned several people who cared for clients there. I should have seen through the dog and pony show that was the "tour" of the facility. I was under a lot of pressure to make the right decision for my husband. Unfortunately, it was not the right decision. Barely 48 hours after his admission, he was transported to the ER at my urgent request. He was injured while under their "care". One month later, he went into inpatient hospice.

Patient Beware

My daughter was found unresponsive on [date removed]. After she currently has a ventilator. She is unable to live without. The administration has not contacted me regarding this incident. Nor has anyone inquired about her current situation. The "health care workers " and administration should not be allowed to care for patients in this facility because they are incapable.

A generally positive experience

My father recently entered the assisted living facility at Sterling Care Hillhaven and…so far, so good. Sterling Care was one of the AFs that A Place for Mom suggested. All of the staff I’ve encountered there are incredibly nice and respectful and my Dad confirms this. Even the other residents are all very nice. He really likes the food there and has even started eating dinners in their dining room. He was very confused and weak when he first entered and the staff helped him get back on his feet and recover from his illness. The only negative is that the overall response time when the call button is pushed could be improved, especially at nighttime, but they eventually come to help. We are relieved he is in a caring place with assistance.

A nightmare experience

Please do not send your family here. The staff/patient ratio is not good. They can not respond in a timely manner. Several times I was on the phone with mom and they would comment to her to stop hitting the call button. Several times she waited many hours to be changed while sick with COVID and C-dif. Both were caught while inpatient at Hillhaven. Her bed was often filthy and so was she. One staff member suggested that I come in and clean her myself. Yeah. She’s no longer a resident here.

Review for Sterling Care Hillhaven

The memory care residents would be well served if there were more active engagement by staff in the late afternoon, 6-830 pm. I would recommend Sterling - Hill Haven, but with the proviso that one follow up with the nursing staff on the welfare of loved ones.

Love for my Dad

This place is wonderful and the staff are caring and easy to talk to. My Dad was only there for a short time before he passed away in September, but I could not of asked for a better place for my Dad to be until the end of his life. He was diagnosed with Lung cancer and I live in California and the staff were helpful in setting up a apartment for him and hospice. The place is very clean and Every staff I met where kind and compassionate. I was on my way from California and they had someone sit with my Dad so he would not be alone as he crossed over to a better place.

A reassuring choice.

I would say it was positive, l like how they call promptly if for example, your loved one complains of pain in "wherever". the nurse and calls to inform you, tells you what action is proposed. The deciding factor was the proximity to home, about 1.5 miles. l' m still exploring a dedicated home addition and in-home care, taking it one day at a time. I appreciate your interest/concern for all facing this journey. Good food and full assistance for residents who need it. esidents seem to be well taken care of, always well clothed and groomed never untidy looking.

I Feel My Loved Is In A Safe Environment With People That Care About Them

This is a place I would go to for myself. The value, the service, and the affordability has been superb here. The price per month has been a flat rate for us, and this was a big plus over the other communities in the area. The meals, housekeeping, medical staff for memory care, and furniture was all included in the monthly fee. The medical staff is responsive to the residents needs in memory care and this was a big plus for us. The only thing that is additional is the community doing the daily laundry for our loved one.

A very caring, safe place, which means whole lot to us.

Come check out Hillhaven! Their admissions person was really outstanding, although she has left at t his point. But they have some really great people there. They really do their best to take care of my mom. They're proactive. We feel very fortunate to have her there. Her room is twice as big as what she had at another facility, with twice the closet space, a huge bathroom, and tons of windows. And it's very affordable. What could be better?

Would Recommend It

For a patient with dementia, I don't think they provide enough stimulation. There aren't a lot of activities, but that has a lot to do with Covid. The staff that I've talked to are friendly, but they can be hard to get in touch with. I think they provide good care overall.

Beware!

This place is not family owned. It's owned by Meridian Senior Healthcare. This facility is so unprofessional from the time you walk in the door. Rooms are not cleaned everyday until I complained. I am a retired nurse! Beware!

Hillhaven is all about quality patient care.

I have stayed at Hillhaven three times this year, twice for knee replacement rehabilitation and just recently for rehab due to a shoulder replacement. I have had ample time to observe the staff interacting, not only with me, but with other residents who are residing in their assisted living, rehabilitation rooms as well as full time residents who are there due to physical challenges of many origins. The staff care very much for those in their charge. The kitchen takes extra care to make sure that any dietary likes and dislikes are respected. The physical and occupational staff are thorough and take their time with those recovering from injuries or surgery. Their Social Activities coordinator, [name removed], goes out of her way to engage with all the residents, both permanent and temporary, to make sure that they have games, reading material, and activities to keep them at their best. The rooms are spotless, the halls are clean. There are no odors anywhere and I have never seen a resident in any condition but clean and well cared for. I have passed rooms where I could see employees spending time ensuring that residents who could not feed themselves were eating. I could point out much, much more because I cannot say enough good things about my experiences with Hillhaven as a rehabilitation patient. I had been in other nursing homes in the past, and this one is stars above all those others that I have personal experience with. FIVE STARS all the way!!!

Highly Recommend for Yourself or Family Member!

My mother was at Hillhaven in both skilled nursing and, later, assisted living. We found the staff to be very attentive and caring. I was personally impressed by how each of the staff members felt empowered to help you with your need - even if it wasn't their specific area of work. I have worked in multiple hospitals and have visited many nursing facilities, Hillhaven is one of the best!

Excellent Care

I would highly recommend Hillhaven. The facility is very well run and maintained. I came there for rehab and found it to be excellent. I received compasionate care. An example was my aide, [Removed] who anticipated my every need and was very pleasant when she came to care for me. One of the activities I especially enjoyed was the book group.

even though we toured in July, my mother-in-law now needs a permanent residence and assistance in routines of daily life and HillHaven offers all she needs. [Removed] of the activities staff was our guide. She has been there nine years and is going to Bowie State to pursue a nursing career. I had a work mate who lived there for several, [Removed] knew her and her niece by name. She passed away several years ago. Whenever I saw [Removed] she said how pleasant her stay at Hillhaven was. She was always well dressed when she came to my place of employment. I printed the check list and all of my observations would be a five star rating. The facility is family owned about 30 yrs, Grounds are neat and well maintain. The room was light and airy. The staff and residences call each other by name and there were numerous activities for residents to partake in. We missed lunchtime. They have choices on the menu and a dietician to assist with special needs. The nurses station is in the center of each floor plan (3). There are pulls in the bath room and near the bed as well as pendent for the resident to wear. There is an activities board outside the dining room as well as a printed sheet for residents. Bright not dark and dingy. They keep temp in hallways at 75 degrees. handrail through out and exits well marked. While we were in a sample room (hopefully her room) the lady who lived next door wanted to know if I was going to be her new neighbor and we told her we were looking for a home for my mother-in-law. She and [Removed] called each other by name. They meet weekly to discuss are plan and also will meet the families for updates. Did not discuss legal and financial concerns since [Removed] was not in the position to ans these questions, but will discuss with [Removed] next week.
