Three meal a day and room service when needed

The best would have to be three good meals a day with dessert included with lunch and dinner. If you want to sleep in or sleep too much or you miss a bingo game where most come and it is a fun activity. There are also movies and crafts and exercise at mid morning. If you are in need for medicine they will give it to you daily or provide it for weeks at a time to take when you wish.

Review for Brookdale Orland Park

My mom was happy at first with the place, but then she didn't really like it. I think that she felt like there weren't a lot of options for her. Some of the activities that she was interested in kept getting canceled. They tend to play a lot of bingo and that is not of interest to my mom. My mom enjoys reading and watching different mystery shows on television, and she was really interested in watching the Olympics when she was there. It didn't seem like other people were interested in doing that. The food was OK on some days But other days she was not really impressed. They bragged about always having fresh fruit, but it was always the same fruit, oranges, bananas, and apples. It was summertime, so one would hope that there would be other fruits available, and that was something important to my mom. My mom also had a nasty run in with a couple of caregivers who did not respect her privacy and made comments about her loose bowels that embarrassed her. When I spoke to the manager and requested that those caregivers not be around my mom, I was assured that they would not be, but she told me later that They were still taking care of her. For the first time ever, my mom got pink eye. I think that this establishment is a nice enough place. If you are interested in what they have to offer, but if you aren't, then you really won't have a nice time there. I also think that the nurses and the caregivers are overworked and in general there aren't enough of them on staff at any given time. I am sure that they are staffed at the minimum of what is required by law, but that doesn't necessarily mean that that is really enough.

You have to be independent. If you are in need of a lot of assistance, it may not be for you. My aunt pays extra for assistance and always has to ask for it. Ex. Showering assistance twice a week. Not sure it happens unless she asks.

Welcoming and friendly service

My wife and I have visited several assisted living facilities in the Southwest suburbs for her 74 year brother with neuropathy and we clearly found Brookdale to be our #1 choice. First, the facility is clean and comfortable; somewhat of a home like atmosphere. Next, we have met several staff members who go above being personable and caring. The residents all seem to be well cared for, the variety of food looks delicious and there are lots of available activities. As a matter of fact, I actually enjoyed listening to the residents and staff interacting in the community lounge on several occasions. I realize all too well that transitioning from your home and losing one’s independence is difficult and the responsibilities of the staff are not always easy, but the folks at Brookdale really care about the people they care for.

Brookdale Orland Park

They pass the buck, never get transferred to the person I'm looking for they have the front desk answer the phone and take a message every time you call you can never get a hold of anyone. And they don't return phone calls sometimes they don't return emails but [name removed] the recruiter was very friendly when The first moved in and said everything was fine even said most people staff members there are 10 year but I think there's only two people I recognize since he's been there in October they're still there it seems like there's a large turnover right there for staff And still haven't met the doctor. Also not sure it it's standard w all nursing homes. But everything is all carte. There is the room rate which covers the room and utilities. And laundry service. But sheets are never changed it's $[removed] to dispense medicine plus have to go thru there company for meds that charged a differ rate for meds that are normally free in the mail. Which is part of something called personal service rate

Father LOVED it

My father had a stroke 1 year prior to moving into Brookdale. He was living an isolated life in his home and we pushed him to move to assisted living. Over the 7 months my father spent at Brookdale he became the happiest I’d seen him in the 6 years since our mother had passed and left him a widow. He raved every time I came to visit about how much he enjoyed doing puzzles, trivia, playing Bingo, and just hanging out with the men in the community. It was a place my father blossomed into a social butterfly and out of a sadness he had from loosing his wife. I will be forever grateful to Brookdale for being a place my father truely enjoyed living.

Review for Brookdale Orland Park

The resident unexpectedly passed away at a nearby hospital. A day before she was admitted I checked on her and she had run out of oxygen tanks that she utilized while going downstairs for meals and other activities. She told me she hadn't had any for awhile so I went to the nurses station to ask why. I took matters into my own hands and called the company myself. Brookdale claimed they had ordered them but the company said they didn't have any requests. The tanks came the next day but she was already in the hospital. When she passed away she had no relatives to help clear out her belongings so I did it myself. There were some heavy boxes and the only thing they offered me was a dolly. No help no nothing no empathy. Furthermore there were oxygen tanks that needed to be picked up and the mattress from her bed. I called the company to let them know but Brookdale informed me that if they were not picked up by the end of the months(which was in a couple of days) she would have to pay an additional months rent.

Brookdale Orland Park

Reasons we chose Brookdale Orland Park: Clean friendly facility. Reasonably priced Close to my home and other places I visit often Small enough for my dad to get around easily. Communication with families and communication internally could use improvement. In addition to response times and availability of the admin staff.

Room for improvement

I have noticed there have been a few changes in administrative staff. The cnas housekeeping and rns were decent. Maintenance was asked if he [name removed] could put up a few pictures on the wall which he never did. She ran out of oxygen canisters and was supposed to be on 3 liters continuously. I went on vacation and came back to find she had no oxygen . She did have a free standing unit in her room that she utilized but could no longer go downstairs for bingo or to exercise class. She did go down for breakfast lunch and dinner without it because. They charge for bringing her meals to the room. When she had to be admitted to the hospital a couple of times I asked if they could pro rate what she was charged for medication administration and they said they don't do that. When I came back from vacation I immediately ordered more portable tanks for her. I asked the nurses station why they didn't order tanks and they said they did. I was told that when ordered they are delivered the next day. Unfortunately she became short of breath the same day the tanks were delivered and passed away the next few days at the hospital. I am asking for copies of doctor's orders and I also had to empty the apartment by the end of the month. I ended up having to pay someone and when I asked the financial administrator about some donation center that would take some of the furniture she wouldn't even suggest anyplace except for 1800 got junk. I had the apartment emptied but left clothes hangers that I thought the next tenant might be able to use and a brand new walker. I live all the way southeast and they wouldn't even remove those items. I finally was able to contact a new administrative person named Dominique and she did it for me. Hope she doesn't get in trouble. I had heavy bags of stuff to throw in the dumpster and the maintenance guy who was young didn't even offer to help.! Just take it to the dumpster he said. I am a 71 year old woman and weigh 115 lbs. I did all the cleaning up and I know that families are supposed to it. But they had no sympathy except for [name removed]. Once you no longer can pay their rent they couldn't care less. I would recommend that people either keep a close watch on their loved ones while they live there or do more research about their policies and procedures before they move in. Maybe research other places also.

Met all my families expectations.

My interaction with all levels of staff has been very positive. I interview I believe 9 assisted living facilities with wife and sister, we all agreed this looked the best, And haven't been disappointed yet. We would recommend this community to other families based on our experience so far.

Our family's experience

My husband is no longer at Brookdale. He is living on his own since [date removed]. The therapy and wound management were superior. My husband did not eat in the dining room but rather took his meals to his room. He didn't feel he belonged there as numerous residents were elderly and confined to wheelchairs. The head nurse didn't believe he could live on his own and manage his medications even though he expressed he could for a few months. My husband has a strong will and is doing quite well on his own. He actually has gone back to visit a few residents who are lonely and don't have visitors often.
