A warm home
As a local Asian American family here in Durham and after looking at several places for our mom, we chose Brookdale Durham—and honestly, we’re glad we did. From the start, the staff made her feel welcome. They learned her name right away, and even remembered little things like how she prefers her tea. It’s those small touches that made a big difference for us. The place itself is clean, feels peaceful, and has these really nice outdoor spaces. My mom loves sitting in the courtyard or watching the birds and fish—they actually have a bird enclosure she visits almost every day. Are there areas that could improve? Slightly, sometimes it takes a bit longer to get help when it’s busy, and we’ve had to remind them about housekeeping once —but nothing that’s ever made us regret the decision. Everyone is trying, and you can feel that. And Mom feels love and respected and a wonderful little social group of ladies

We recently toured Brookdale Durham, and from the first conversation, we felt genuinely welcomed. As a Jewish family, we were pleasantly surprised (and deeply appreciative) that they offer Shabbat services right on site. It’s not something we expected, but it really made us feel seen. The staff are kind and attentive, and there’s a calm, comfortable energy throughout the community. It’s clear they care about creating a space that respects different backgrounds and traditions. Brookdale feels like a place where our loved one can thrive—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually too.

A recent investigation by the department of service has revealed lots of problems with the facility most especially not having enough people on duty to care for the residence. There is some speculation that they are being sued.

The facility has excellent staff attending the patients, efficient and compassionate. The food is extremely well prepared and the dining room, with fresh flowers on each table is in fact a charming dining room and not an institutional cafeteria. The interior patio is quite beautiful and well attended. But it is important to under stand that one is otherwise essentially renting an empty studio apartment. Beds, chairs, furniture the tenant must provide....though l believe cable TV is provided and basic kitchen appliances. I had issues with some management policies.

My uncle spent his final years at Brookdale Durham, and I’ll always be grateful for the love he received there. The staff didn’t just care for him—they *knew* him. They remembered his obsession with banana pudding (they’d sneak him an extra serving! Lol) and how he loved sitting in the courtyard, watching the birds. Even when his memory faded, their patience never did. The people there treat residents like family, not tasks. They’d FaceTime me so I could see his smile. It felt like a warm, lively home. He passed last year, but I still stop by to thank the team. They gave him joy when he needed it most.

The memory care is nice but they lo-vall to get you in and with in four months our cost had jumped to over [removed] while moms needs had barely changed. When I spoke to other families they said this was the “usual routine” to get you in the door. As an MD and a caregiver I am offended by this practice.

I was impressed with the staff responsible for patient care and with the food quality which was very good. The facilities, especially the dining room and the central patio are very attractive. However l feel that essential items like beds and wheelchairs should be provided by the facility and that medical supervision by MDs should be stricter. The physical therapist was excellent. For permanent or long term residents it is probably as good as you can get in Durham, though l have no experience with other comparable facilities.

They are all very friendly and nice. They are sweet to the residents. The cost for the value was better than the others. The facility is kept up very well and is a pleasant place to visit.

Basically the facility was very good but overall expensive. The main problem is their Dallas billing group creates unknown charges - with obvious late fees-does not accept any calls but says to 'work with your local community for any issues.

The are always under staffed, I spoke out about it… but I hope I’m not being punished for it, but sometimes I feel like I am. The staff they do have work very hard, and I understand that more patients have come in, but they should be divided better between the staff… first floor gets neglected I feel and not on purpose.

I love this place and I’m glad to call it my home. The staff here is great. I am able to have my little dog here with me as well, which is great because I’ve had her for 12 years. The meals are excellent. I am glad to be apart of this community

I would not recommend. They have been short staffed for the last 15 months but still continue to admit people that beyond their capabilities to care for. As long as the money is coming in they keep residents that need to transition to skilled care. My loved one was not getting his meds on time and ended up in the hospital several times with fluid overload. Myloved one does not have any cognitive issues so he knew when he was late getting meds.

We moved in few Months ago and we love it! Everyone has made us feel at home. Momma was so lonely and now has so many friends. She is on a schedule which has helped her so much. She is just so much happier now.

We toured Brookdale Durham during our search for an Assisted Living facility for our loved one. We chose this facility and our loved one was set to move in, but never got the chance to do so. However, the staff at this facility are great. The cleanliness and friendliness are great, as well. I would certainly recommend Brookdale Durham to others.

My dad moved in earlier this year. We had him in another place and was not happy there. We made the decision to move him and it turned out to be the best thing we could have done. Dad has made so many friends and just loves his caregivers. Anytime I reach out to the community, the Executive Director or Head Nurse always calls me back and helps me with whatever I need. I give this place 5 stars!

Brookdale Durham is a really nice facility. However, like every other industry in America, they are short on staff, which has a direct negative effect on the overall experience of the residents. Executive staff is working on hiring though.

They had a hard time retaining staff and getting new ones, but that's not their fault. My mother loved it there. She made good friends and participated in the activities. Communication with the family was good. They worked with me on mom telling them one thing and confirming with me. They only compliant she had was the food, but she had no problem eating it! I would definitely recommend this facility to others. The only thing we did wrong was waited too late to put her there.
